Exclusive Insights from IMT CDL Alumni Await (Unlock The Power Of Learning Through Alumni Experiences)

Sushant Gomber,
PGDM (Executive) - Operations,
July-2023 Batch

In a world where tales of leaving jobs to pursue entrepreneurial dreams dominate the narrative, there exists a lesser-told but equally inspiring journey—a transition from entrepreneurship back to the corporate realm. I invite you to delve into my story—a narrative of struggle, learning, and eventual triumph—a journey that defied norms and misconceptions.

My entrepreneurial voyage commenced in 2012 with a food venture in my hometown, Lucknow. Through sheer determination and bootstrap methods, I propelled it to a commendable level. However, amidst this success, a yearning for intellectual fulfillment and continued growth surfaced, steering me towards a pivotal decision.

Fast forward to 2017, I made a significant shift by joining an early-stage startup in Mumbai—upGrad. Embracing this opportunity, I found myself crafting and leading large teams, becoming an integral part of a rapidly burgeoning industry.

Yet, this transition was far from smooth. I encountered skepticism and unsettling inquiries about my departure from entrepreneurship. The corporate realm, initially, seemed unwelcoming—I faced bullying and skepticism, perceived as an outsider threatening the status quo.

The crux of my experience lies in the disparity between entrepreneurial setbacks being misconstrued as failures in the corporate sphere. Overcoming this stigma demanded tenacity. Despite facing adversity, my unwavering commitment to excellence gradually transformed perceptions within my professional circle.

Today, there’s a palpable shift—an increased acknowledgment and value attributed to entrepreneurial experiences, particularly within the startup landscape. This evolution signifies a changing narrative—one that recognizes the wealth of knowledge and resilience gained through entrepreneurial endeavors.

I extend a resounding encouragement to young MBAs—to explore diverse professional avenues in their 20s before settling into a singular domain in their 30s. Emphasizing that transitioning from entrepreneurship to the corporate world is not just acceptable but enriching.

My journey underscores the significance of resilience, adaptability, and the amalgamation of varied experiences. It stands as a testament to overcoming barriers, fostering change, and validating the merit of diversified professional trajectories.

Let this narrative be a beacon of inspiration—a reminder that success transcends conventional trajectories, embracing the amalgamation of diverse experiences on the path to triumph.

IKIGAI- The Japanese Secret to A Long And Happy Life

Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life by Héctor García and Francesc Miralles is a book about the Japanese concept of ikigai, which roughly translates to “reason for being.” It is the idea that a fulfilling and happy life comes from discovering and pursuing one’s true passion and purpose. The book explores the ikigai of the people of Okinawa, a Japanese island known for its high concentration of centenarians. The authors argue that it is not just Okinawans’ healthy diet and lifestyle that contributes to their long and happy lives, but also their strong sense of ikigai.

The book identifies four key components of ikigai: when these four components overlap, you find your ikigai.

Practical advice on how to find your ikigai and how to live a more fulfilling and meaningful life. Some of the tips include:
